Semiotic Boundaries and Cultural Dynamics

Semiotic Boundaries and Cultural Dynamics

We are pleased to annonce the Open Lecture titled « Semiotic Boundaries and Cultural Dynamics » by DrTiit Remm,  Research Fellow in Semiotics in the Department od Semiotics, University of Tartu, Estonia. The lecture will take place on Thurday 4 April at AUTH SemioLab, ground floor of the New Building of the Faculty of Philosophy.

Short description

Boundary is a central concept and mechanisms in semiotics – in cultural systems and processes as well as at the most elementary level of semiosis. The semiotic nature of boundaries as spatializing distinctions starts from simple distinctions and identity, and goes up to the tangibility of materially manifested boundaries and their institutional "making". Rather than objective structural features they exist in the process of distinction making and by applications of distinctions. In the sociocultural context boundaries appear as semiotic means of managing future and (socio)cultural dynamics in more general. On that basis we can ask if it is possible to point out and interpret “boundary signs” from historical and contemporary material.
